Latenite Lounging Records » soul, hip hop, blues, jazz and funk from Brighton, UK
Biography
Latenite Lounging is a new independent label, based in Brighton, UK. Drawing on a pool of homegrown talent, with the support and endorsement of established international artists, we aim to release great records from proper hip hop through soul, breaks and deep house to downtempo electronica.
Latenite Lounging started life in the year 2000 as a radio show that was broadcast every sunday for over 3 years on London’s leading underground radio station, HouseFM.
With an eclectic music policy based around deep, soulful house grooves, over the years the show welcomed many up and coming DJs and producers from Europe and the US and built up a considerable following of listeners. After increasing demands from listeners in London, Latenite Lounging introduced a night to accompany the radio show.
Building on live events in London, described by Time Out magazine as “a really cool ‘lil weekend soiree”, and a monthly night in Brighton which has now been running continuously for over 6 years, the imprint was launched in 2006 with a strong roster of artists from the UK and the US.
Artists
SumSuch
DJ & multi-instrumentalist Will Sumsuch's tracks have garnered radio support across the Globe from such tastemakers as Ben Watt (Everything But The Girl, Galaxy FM) and Ras Kwame (BBC 1Xtra) among many others. His music had also been used in national TV ad campaigns in the UK. Sublime remixes for Soulphonic Soundsystem, Candy Apple, George Sollis & Ozzie Jones have placed him increasingly in demand as a producer. His debut single on Urban Torque 'Latenite Bypass' dropped in March 2009 to much acclaim, including support from Ian Pooley and Allister Whitehead.
His forthcoming deep house EP 'Found You' drops late in 2009 on Israeli label Dance N Dust, and a second release on Urban Torque is in the pipeline.
As a DJ Will is a consistent champion of new underground deep & soulful house, as well as a passionate torch-carrier for the old school sound of hip hop. Known for his eclectic, feel-good sets which retain a unique brand of soul and musicality regardless of genre, Will has been playing records across the UK and Europe for 10 years.
Doc Luv & Kev-Ski
Kev-ski is one of Hip Hop's true originals. Starting out in the late 70’s deejaying at block parties around the neighborhoods of Harlem, his 25 year career has seen him work with the A-Z of Hip Hop's pioneers - Doug E. Fresh, Bizmarkie, Rob Base, Masterdon, The Force Emcees and many others. During this period he met Doc Luv, one of the finest and most underrated lyricists in Hip Hop. Their partnership led to a series of record deals and a major international following which remains to this day.
Kev-ski’s DJ career went on to span world tours with Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew, Kool Moe Dee, Whodini, Eric b. & Rakim, Bizmarkie, Public Enemy, LL cool J, Krs-one and Stetsasonic. Presented in the form of a classic old skool mixtape, Off the Bench – Volume 1 is a stunning document of Doc Luv & Kev-ski at their very finest. Incorporating original unreleased material salvaged from live and raw reel-to-reel recordings, jaw dropping exclusive collaborations and rare, never-heard-before mashups, this is a truly unique return to Hip Hop's glorious origins.
Agent & Raynge
This timely revision of the 90’s dance classic ‘Pump up the Jam’, marks the first release for unlikely Hip Hop duo Grand Agent and Liv L’Raynge. The cuts are indicative of the exciting new style these artists have converged to produce, with a knowing nod to the old school and an irreverent fresh sound.
With five critically acclaimed solo albums to his credit, Grand Agent has carved a unique niche in underground Hip Hop. He has recorded and toured with the best in the game. Pete Rock, Hi-Tek, Lord Finesse and King Britt are among the many legendary producers that have worked with the native Philadelphian. After connecting with Liv on the 2003 Vans Warp Tour, the two began recording together immediately. These tracks, recorded just days after meeting, were the result of that instant chemistry.
Ozzie Jones
Latenitelounging’s sophomore release is a rare solo record from a hugely influential veteran musician. The Nat Turner EP spans several years of writing and recording, and is representative of Ozzie’s ability to mix genres like no other. Part hip hop, part soul, part blues, this record captures a prodigious talent making the most of his gift.
Asbest The Moor King
Latenite Lounging presents the debut release from Asbest The Moor King, a 29 year old Zambian MC/Poet now based in London. Asbest fuses the two diverse cultures to form a potent style taking the listener on a sometimes challenging journey full of symbolism and magic.
Geneva's DJ Goo (Syncrovision, Blue Note) completes this unusual package with a remix that heralds future collaborations stemming from Asbest's recent performance in Geneva with Brian Jackson, and a release on Goo's own 'Synchrovision' label in the near future. Truly one for the connoisseurs, Latenite Lounging once again bucks mainstream trends to deliver a release of depth, intelligence and beauty.
Dubnosis
Dubnosis is a solo project by legendary Australian DJ/producer Crucial D. Currently endorsed by Stanton Electronics and co-founder of Wicked Beat Sound System (nominated for three ARIA awards including 2003 Best Dance Release Award), we are honoured that Crucial D has chosen Latenite Lounging for his first solo release.
A journey through Crucial D’s musical heritage, the EP encompasses influences from dub, breaks and house music, all tied together with an unparelleled joyous enthusiasm and sense of fun.
The first 3 tracks see Crucial D's trademark wobbly basslines and off kilter drums in full effect, ready to lift any dancefloor. Rounding off the package are potent remixes by hot UK reggae producer Richie Phoe and our own Sumsuch, both of which take the EP into deeper, moodier territory.
